Monitoring, measurement, analysis and evaluation

Plain-language summary

Measuring what matters environmentally — the right parameters, with calibrated equipment — then analysing the results to judge how you are really performing.

What the clause is really asking

You cannot manage environmental performance you do not measure. The clause requires you to determine what needs monitoring and measuring, the methods, when to do it and when to evaluate results, using calibrated or verified equipment where needed. You must analyse and evaluate the data to judge environmental performance and EMS effectiveness, and communicate relevant results. The intent is reliable, decision-grade information on your significant aspects and key performance, not numbers gathered and ignored.

What auditors look for

Auditors check you are monitoring the parameters tied to your significant aspects and permit conditions — effluent quality, emissions, energy, waste volumes — at the right frequency. They verify monitoring instruments are calibrated or verified and traceable. They look for actual analysis and evaluation of trends, not just raw data, and ask how results inform decisions and objectives.

Typical evidence

Monitoring plan covering parameters, methods and frequency; calibration or verification records for monitoring equipment; monitoring data and trend analysis; performance evaluation records; communication of results.

How to comply — recommendations

Build a monitoring plan covering each significant aspect and permit parameter, with method, frequency and who does it. Use calibrated or verified instruments, with SANAS-accredited labs for compliance sampling. Analyse trends rather than just filing readings — track them against targets and limits. Feed the evaluation into objectives and management review so the data actually changes decisions.

Common nonconformities

Significant aspects or permit parameters not monitored; monitoring equipment not calibrated or verified; data collected but never analysed or evaluated; monitoring frequency below permit requirements; results not communicated.
